Scarlett and Thomas we walking through the park towards the end of their date. Scarlett had had a lot more fun than she expected to, and she hadn't seen any sign of zephyr the whole night. Tomorrow she would get the restraining order and everything would go back to normal.
But sometimes things were just too good to be true.
Out of nowhere a gun fired in the dark and the sound seemed to echo for miles. Thomas stopped walking and stood there looking at his chest before falling back.
Scarlett screamed and pulled out her phone to call 911 but the phone was kicked out of her hand.
"No." Zephyr said. "He needs to die."
"What the hell are you talking about?! No I am going to save him!" She said before trying to run over and get her phone.
Zephyr grabbed her and held her back. Thomas looked up at them as he was dying. "....why....did you....do this...."
"Your girly friend here is not who she says she is. I need her for something." Zephyr said.
"That's not true Thomas! I never lied to you about anything!" She said through tears. She struggled in zephyrs grip and started screaming before zephyr covered her mouth. Where was everyone in the city that never sleeps?
"....let her...go...." He said trying to sit up but quickly falling back again. He tried to say something else, but he had lost too much blood. He had died.
Zephyr let go of Scarlett and she knelt over Thomas and cried. "Why would you do this?!" She screamed. "What did he do to you?!"
"I needed to teach you a lesson. When I said I needed your help, I meant it." Zephyr said.
"You're crazy. You are actually psychotic." She said.
"Maybe." He said with a shrug. "But that doesn't change anything. My dad and I need an army, but not just any army. We need an army of souls. You have the power to collect souls, so you are going to do that for us."
"No. Absolutely not. I'm not helping you with anything." Scarlett said.
"Oh yes you are." Zephyr said. "Because if you don't, Thomas won't be the only one to die on your behalf. There will be many more. That Sam guy you care so much about will be one of them. Even though he has a girlfriend and will never love you."
"You can't get away with this. I'll call the cops. I'm getting a restraining order. You will go to jail." She said standing up and glaring at him.
He laughed. "It seems that simple doesn't it? This is war Scarlett. We are taking down the Olympian gods and you are going to help us whether you like it or not. All my years of loneliness I spent learning how to control the mist. I can change anything. I can make it look like you killed Thomas. But since I need you, I'm covering it up to make it look like suicide."
She clenched her fists and punched him in the face. Her hands were shaking so bad.
Zephyr smirked and rubbed his nose. "I know, I deserved that." He walked over to Thomas and used the mist to make it look like Thomas had killed himself.
Scarlett choked back a sob when she saw his soul hovering over his body.
"You see it don't you? Here," he dug a small box out of his bag. "Use this to capture them."
Scarlett took the box and stared at Thomas's soul. "Can we let his go? I don't want him to be eternally damned by the gods for fighting in this."
"Why would I do that?" He asked.
"Because if you do I won't try to fight back..... I'll listen to you." She said.
He stared at her skeptically. "Fine. Let him go. But he's the only one."
She looked at his soul and willed him to go to the underworld. The soul disappeared and Scarlett looked at zephyr. "So are we just going to go around killing people all the time and making it look like suicide?"
"No. Most of the deaths will be easy. We will just go to hospitals and jails and crime scenes and get the souls before they escape. And I can make people angry enough to kill someone if I need to. Don't worry, we will get plenty." He said with a smirk.
Scarlett squeezed the box in her hand before slipping it in her bag. "I'm going home. Just, don't talk to me at work anymore please. I don't want Sam to try getting involved."
"I'll think about it." He said before disappearing.
Scarlett walked off and wiped the tears from her eyes as they started pouring out again. She had to calm down before she went home. People would be questioning her at school when they found out what happened to Thomas. The last thing she needed was attention.
