Ash sat next to Joy on the couch, some mindless cartoon playing. His mother was in the kitchen, cooking lunch. She was happy there was another kid in the house. She always wanted more kids.
It still was to much, Ember was gone, possibly for good. There was a painful twinge in his chest as Ash stood up and headed for the upstairs bathroom. How could he have just let her leave? He should have been selfish. Kept her with him and found a way on his own to make her remember. But he couldn't, she was to important to him, and now he'd lost her forever.
Closing the door behind him, he locked it. Taking his meds out of the medicine cabinet along with a bottle of mouthwash. She wasn't coming back...she wasn't. He needed to accept that, but he couldn't. There was too much doubt and not enough hope to ever make it right. Popping the top off of both he downed the contents and stared into the mirror. He couldn't do it without her.
At least thirty minutes later he was close to passing out on the floor. All he could see was the fibers of the rug and the wall behind that. Everything was going dim, everything would be over soon. Soon, he'd be okay there wouldn't be anymore pain. Banging came from the door, frightened voices. He didn't care. The world went dark, but he could still hear his mother screaming and Joy crying. They'd be better off with out him.
His mother used a spell, the door opening finally. There was her baby, near death on the floor. She apricated herself, Joy, and him to a alleyway near a hospital and ran to it. Shouting for help as Joy held onto Ash's hand. It was hard to tell if the doctors could save him. They rushed him to the ER and told the two women to wait.
"What if they don't save him?!" Joy cried.
"Shh," Hailey said smoothing her hair back, "...they'll try."
It was nearly three hours before the Nurses came back in and got the two. Saying that he was awake, but something still seemed off. They went to the room and Ash turned to look at them. His eyes blank and staring.
"Ash..." Hailey whispered, "Baby are you alright?"
He shook his head and looked back out the window. Joy went over and whispered in his ear. He nodded and Joy went back to his mother.
"It's Ember," she said with a slight tinge of anger, "Can you give us a minute?"
Hailey left the room without another word. She couldn't believe how much that girl ment to Ash.
"Ash?" Joy asked sitting on his bed. He just turned to look at her. She could see the hurt and hopelessness in his eyes. "Ash, how about...how about you start liking me?"
"What?" he asked, sitting up slightly confused.
"Get her off your mind. We won't talk about her, we'll just write music and help you forget. You need to forget Ash," she said starting to cry again, "Your mom and I....we...we can't lose you Ashton."
He still looked confused as he brought his hand up to her cheek to smear a tear away. Why was she so sad? He rubbed her cheek, something he use to do to Ember when she was upset. Maybe it'd be better to forget her, to move on to Joy.
"Ok," he said quietly, "Ok."
Joy smiled and leaned her cheek into his palm. Pulling her forward, he tested himself, giving her a single kiss, and giving up on Ember. Not entirely, but enough to make things easier, bearable.
