Brom entered the man's mind and probed around, flipping through memories. He paused on any scene that looked interesting. An initiation ceremony, a promotion.
He fast forwarded to ten years ago and let himself become immersed in the memory.
A slightly younger Puoy without wrinkles was staring at a piece of paper, apparently given to him by a man sitting across from him at a great mahogany desk in an expensive looking office.
"So you'll take the job then?" the employer asked.
"Of course." Puoy smiled, a gleam in his eye.
"Get going then."
"Yes sir."
"Oh, one more thing. If you collect the Stone on the way, you will receive a handsome bonus."
"I'll do my best, sir." Puoy got up and left, still holding the paper. Brom took a closer look at it. It was a hit list, and at the top of it were the name of Peter and Bertha Holly. And then below it was a longer list of names and at the top it was titled "Traitors and Descendants of Traitors of Wizardkind." Brom scanned the list, and smack dab below her parents' names was Katherine's.
Brom fast forwarded a week after this to September 26, 2002. He watched as the Separatists entered the house, killing an old man. He jumped through the memory to the second floor, waiting for Puoy to arrive. The men broke down the attic door, and the splinters flew through Brom without hurting him. He watched the exchange between Bertha and Puoy. Then he killed her. Puoy then searched the house meticulously for something, but left empty-handed.

Brom drew his mind back into himself and looked at Katherine.
"Well, it would appear that he's been their head assassin for the last ten years, tracking down a long list of so-called 'traitors.'"
Kat swallowed a lump in her throat. "And?"
"Your grandparents were at the top of the list. Your parents and your names were on there as well. He's been with them for about thirty years it would appear. Joined at 16 when his parents kicked him out."
Kat nodded. She was not going to break down now. No matter what he said. "What else?" she prompted.
"When he killed your grandparents he was told if he found something called 'the Stone' he would receive a bonus. I assume he didn't find it." Brom studied her face intently with his piercing blue eyes.
Kat's mind was reeling. She put her hand over face, trying to stop the flow of memories. She had a flashback of him telling Gram that he would find it. When she'd been rescued by the neighbors the house had been recked into shambles. But she'd never heard of this mysterious 'Stone'. Suddenly she had a jolt in her heart. Her parents were on that list . . . what if that was why they hadn't showed up yet? She squeezed her eyes shut, muttering "No, no, no . . ."
