I stared up at my father, passively waiting his instructions. It was always the same. He was leaving for a business trip, my perfect older sister would be away in her special school for geniuses, and I would be with April. Taking care of her as always. He grabbed my shoulders and looked me straight in the eyes.
"Under no circumstances are you to leave this mansion. Do you understand?"
I didn't answer, just stared blankly at him. He shook me slightly, "Eveangline! Do you understand?!"
"Yes, father."
He released me and left without another word. April was asleep, so I had a bit of time for myself. Walking into the parlor I picked up my violin and started to play. The sad melody calming me and giving me something to do. I hated this place, I was never allowed to leave. I couldn't even go outside in the backyard with my horse unless that man was with me.
I couldn't shake the feeling that something was going to happen. With April sleeping I didn't have to worry about anyone catching me if I left. The cooks and maids would be working to hard, and I'd go unnoticed. Silently I opened the french door and walked onto the grass. Looking up at the sky and smiling at the freedom of the sun on my face with no one watching.
I felt something pulling me towards the woods that sat on the edge of our property. I glanced around before getting up and walking to the woods. Hiking up my skirts so that they wouldn't trail in the dirt. I wove my way around trees and through fallen leaves. I heard something behind me, breathing followed me through the woods. My heart started to thud in my chest. There was something in the woods with me, and it wasn't human.
I started running. The twigs on the ground grabbing at my skirts, tripping me as I ran to god only knew. I fell forward, landing hard on my front, dirt smearing onto my face a fallen branch slicing open my cheek. I didn't know what to do as I scrambled up to find myself at the edge of a lake. Turning around I was face to face with a creature I'd never seen before. I didn't know how to describe it, other than a gross thing that seemed to creep towards me.
In my fear, something took over. A voice that I knew wasn't mine took control. I knew what to do. Chanting in some old language the thing froze, my lips forming the words I'd never heard in my life. I felt powerful, my hand moved forward to point at the monster and as it did, water from the lake rose up and surrounded the thing dragging it under the surface of the water.
Something in me changed that day. I wasn't the little obedient child anymore. My true nature had awoken.
