Prologue
There had once been a time where we could climb trees and go swimming down in the swimming hole. When we could sleep outside under the stars or look at the waves crashing at the base of the cliff beneath us. Once, we had the innoncense of wee bairns, nothing could burden our minds. But then, our lives turned from ordinary to extraordinary. Who knows where we would be without that sudden change. Probably a lassy and a laddie walking down the street, going to school. Today, we would have most likely been dead. But, ye never know what COULD have happened. But, weird things happened in that war. Atrocities that hopefully will never be known to the world. Because during World War II, my brother and I became lab rats, and nothing has ever been the same.
((I'm not actually from Scotland so please bear with me while I try to figure out all the slang and such.))

Chapter One: How We Lost Our Mother
"Aiden! Get yer bum out here this instant an' help me with set up the place will ye?" I yelled towards the kitchen.
Be there in just a second. he said through his mind.
I rolled my eyes and continued cleaning tables. Aiden came out of the kitchen with a broom, a mop, and a bucket. He began sweeping the floor.
"Ah heard there's a new family movin' in down the street. Blokes from London. A bit far away from home?" I said with a laugh.
Ah heard they're minted. said Aiden.
"Well maybe with all that money they could spend a wee bit here." I said with a sigh.
I heard small, feeble footsteps coming down the stairs.
"Maw. Ye cannae help us today. Ye haven't been feeling well."
She continued walking towards the kitchen.
"Mum..."
"Ali, ye cannae stop me. Ah need ta do something. With yer da gone an' all..." she got a distant look in her eyes.
I quickly sat her down on a chair. She sat there and absent mindedly watched Aiden start mopping the floor. He put his hand on her shoulder and continued to mop.
"Ah cannae let ye do all the work yerself." she said suddenly.
I rolled my eyes. "Ma, ye don't need ta worry about us. We've got it. I've cooked yer breakfast if ye be wanting it."
She went into the kitchen and came out with some toast. "Ah'll be back down after Ah take a quick nap." She starte her way back upstairs.
I smiled at myself. She wouldn't wake up for another four hours, poor woman. A quick look at the clock told me it was nearly opening time.
"Aiden! We gotta get this place sorted quick!" Alicia yelled, grabbing the mop bucket and dragging it away.
Seriously? Ah wasn't done with that yet ye oaf. wafted into Alicia's brain.
"Aiden!" she pouted.
Ah've lived with ye fer fourteen years Ali, and yer still the same Ali.
Alicia laughed and changed the sign from Closed to Open. "There. We're done. Aiden can ye mind the store fer a second. Ah'm gonna on Ma."
Aiden nodded from his chair behind the counter.
I ran up the stairs, skipping a step every time, and walked to my mum's room. I opened the door and walked over to her bed.
"Ma? We opened the doors. Ah wanted to know if ye could make yer caramel brownies today. We got a couple of new neighbors that might drop by..."
She didn't answer. Her face was pale and her skin was the color of bad milk.
"Ma?" I whispered again. "Are ye awrite? Mum? Please answer me!" I shook her arm with the same results. I put my finger on her neck.
"Aiden! Go get the doctor! Ma doesn't have a pulse!" I screamed.
Five minutes later, I was being shooed out of the room by the doctor's assistant. The last thing I saw was the doctor shaking his head and pulling a sheet over her face.
Aiden ran into the room and shoved everyone out of the way. I crept towards the door. Tears rolled silently down his cheeks as he took it all in. He pulled back the sheet and looked at our mother's face for the last time.
"Ah love ye." He whispered in a sweet, low voice. He silently kissed her forehead. He walked out, barely looking at the signs of shock on the other people's faces that was probably mirrored on mine. Aiden never talked. Not even when he was younger. He looked at me and immediately gave me a hug.
'We'll be awrite, my wee bairn."

Chapter Two: Flashbacks at Funerals
I sat in the first pew, tears streaming down my cheeks. Aiden sat next to me, his face unemotional and stone cold.
"We are here to say farewell to Mrs. Judith Lockhart, a loving wife and mother." started the minister in a monotone voice. I immediately started to day dream. I immediately flashed back to a year ago.
*Flashback*
Aiden and I were sitting on the stairs, listening to our parents argue downstairs in the store.
"David! Ye cannae leave us again! We need ye here!" my mum yelled in the kitchen.
"Judith. Please. It's fer our family-"
"No! Ye will listen to me and listen good. We need ye here. Aiden needs a da to teach him how to be a young man! Alicia needs a da who will plague her love life in the future. Ye can't keep leaving on these business trips! It ain't right fer the family! God knows what ye do, ye could be with some hoor and Ah wouldn't even know..." she burst into tears.
"Ye think Ah've been hanging around with some loose women, aye? Ha! Ah've been in France all this time helping the war effort!" he immediately clapped a hand over his mouth. My mum gasped and sat down. She picked up a glass of water. Her hand was shaking badly.
I looked over at Aiden, wide-eyed. He smirked at me.
That explains everything. he said in my head.
No, not everything... I replied.
My da pulled out a chair across from ma. He put his hands on her knees. She immediately broke down into tears.
"Ah had to help somehow sweetheart. It wasn't awrite fer me to sit around here doin' nothin'. Ah had to help." he said soothingly, while stroking her hair.
"Ye... ye aren't going... back are ye?" she said in between sobs.
"Ah have to. I'm just here for a few days."
"But... Ali... an' Aiden..."
"Please don't tell them love. Ah don't want them to worry."
*End of Flashback*
A sharp jab in the side brought me back to the present. Aiden looked at me weird.
What? I threw at his thoughts.
Why was ye thinking about da? Ah mean... we haven't heard from him in almost four months. he replied.
He's all we got left. he said.
I looked back at the minister. He was almost done with his speech about mum. It felt cold and forced, like he was saying it to get it over with. I sighed as he ended. I stood up and took Aiden's hand as we walked to the hole were our mom was being lowered. I picked up a clod of dirt and threw it on the now unmoving casket.
"Goodbye Ma. Ah love ye." I said. Tears rolled down my face as I turned on my heel and went to the waiting car, where our new guardians were waiting.

Chapter Three: Men in Black
I buried my head in my pillow. I could hear our new foster mother screaming at Aiden.
"Why in the world can't you do anything right?! You stupid Scottish kids can't work worth a lick!"
I cringed as I heard and felt her slap him. Because we had moved to London when we were younger because of my ma's health, all the foster homes we've ever been sent to have been in England. Some people were nice, but most were just out to get a few kids for extra work. A lot of our guardians were abusive. Aiden hasn't spoken in two years and we haven't heard from our dad in the same amount of time.
I heard footsteps coming up the stairs. I closed my eyes, waiting for a tirade about how I wasn't working.
"Alicia! What are you doing here? You're supposed to be down in the basement organizing storage!"
"Marnie... Ah told ye that Ah was sick today..." I whispered silently.
"Get your bum up and get working!" she yelled. I made no move to get up.
"You good for nothing little boot." she said as she punched me in the stomach.
Tears started going down my cheeks as I finally cracked with the good ole red head temper.
"Ye cannae do this anymore! Ah ain't a boot and Ah'm not a packhorse! Ah'm sixteen! Most girls me age are worried about school an' makin' good impressions! Ah 'aven't been ta school since Ah was fourteen-" She slapped me on the mouth. I tasted blood in my mouth.
"Don't you ever talk like that again or I'll beat the living daylights outta you!" she screamed.
Downstairs, the doorbell rung. Her eyes widened.
"You make a sound, you will have the worst beating of your life." she said as she quickly went downstairs.
There was a low murmur of voice downstairs.
"Alicia darling? Can you clean up and come downstairs?" Marnie called in an overly sweet voice. I rolled my eyes. Someone who was really important was here.
I got out of bed. My stomach immediately protested. I washed my face and attempted to look somewhat presentable. I went downstairs to see two men in black sitting across from Marnie and Aiden in the living room.
"Oh hello darling. We were just talking about that fight you were in at the park? See? I told you that it quite rough. Just look at her poor bruised face. It was quite uncalled for. That bloke just came up and-" said Marnie.
"Mam. We are not here to talk about Miss Lockhart's injury. We are here to talk about her father." interrupted one of the men. Me and Aiden looked at each other.
Do ye think we might be getting out o' here? I asked Aiden in my head.
Ah dunno. he answered.
"Alicia, Aiden, we have finally found your father."
"Really? Where is he? Will we see him soon?" I asked eagerly.
"Alicia. We found out that he was discovered by the Nazi forces in an attempt to assassinate Hitler."
Tears began to form in my eyes for the second time that day. "What happened?"
The man sighed. "He had basically disappeared from the face of the earth. Two months ago, we discovered that he was in a concentration camp in Poland. We tried as hard as we could to save him but-"
"Ye couldn't." I whispered.
The man nodded. "He was gassed three weeks ago. We would have contacted you sooner but because you're so entangled in the foster system, it was a miracle we found you this soon."
"What day did he die sir?" I asked.
"June 19, sweetheart."
I looked over at Aiden. His eyes were closed, fighting tears. Our dad had died on our sixteenth birthday. Our only hope of getting out of this hole was gone.
"What's gonna 'appen ta us sir?" I said with a hollow voice.
The man gave a small smile. "The English government has secretly been working on a project that could help us win the war. We have been looking for candidates and because of your situation-" he looked pointedly at Marnie. She scowled. "We have decided that it may be best if you are now taken care of by the country of England."
I looked over at Aiden.
Ask him what kind o' experimentation. said Aiden.
But Aiden, this is our ticket out o' here.
Ali. Ask him.
"What are the experiments?" I said, facing the men.
"We are not at liberty to discuss this until you agree."
Aiden looked at me.
"Or you could stay in the system for another two years until you turn eighteen..." said the man.
Aiden looked at me and nodded.
"We'll do it." I said. 'Ah hope this is the right thin' ta do... Aiden thought.

Chapter Four: The Boulder Comes to Call
We were finally free from the foster system. The men in black took us to a secret research facility somewhere in the English countryside. I looked around at the white room they had given us to share.
"Not 'alf bad. We've been in worse." I said with a smile.
Aiden just stared out the window. It showed the rolling hills that were well known in England.
"It's about da... isn't it?" I asked.
He shrugged. Ah hardly knew him. That's all.
I walked over to him and put my hands on his shoulders. "Yer wishing for all the times that ye never had together. It's awrite Aiden. Ah miss 'im too. We hardly got to know him and all."
Ah just wish... Ah wish we knew him better. But it's too late for that. he thought at me.
The door suddenly swung open and we turned towards the new visitor. A younger, twenty-something year old guy stepped into the room. He had messy blonde hair and blue eyes. He was pretty darn cute, in a dishevelled sort of way.
"Hey there. I'm Doctor Boulder. But you can call me Jack." he said as he shook each of our hands.
"So Ah guess yer gonna tell us what's goin' on an' such." I said, blushing a bit after his warm hand left mine.
Eyes front, soldier. Aiden threw at me.
He's a hot mess. Get off me back about it. I shot back.
Aiden rolled his eyes. Jack smiled.
"That's what I'm here for. Also to tell you what your part will be in the experiment."
"Go right ahead then." I said.
"Okay. So we've been working on genetically mutating the DNA structure to create a so called 'super human.' Anyway, because you two are twins, we'll be able to document and see the correspnoding details between your results." he said.
"So how could it affect us?" I asked hesitantly.
"Well. We are going to take a series of tests tomorrow to determine our future actions."
Ask the bloke that ye think is so attractivert what possible side effects there are. Aiden asked me.
"What kind of side effects could there be?" I asked, throwing a pointed look at Aiden.
"We have done tests on many species of animals. There have seemed to be no side effects, or at least none that were noticeable. But hopefully, nothing will happen to you two." He paused. "Any other questions?"
"Ah 'aven't got any if Aiden don't."
"Well Aiden. Any questions?" Jack asked.
Aiden narrowed his eyes but shook his head.
"Alright then. Hopefully that's all for now. Be ready tomorrow at eight sharp. We don't know how long the examinations may take."
Jack walked out of the room and closed the door behind him.
"Well. What do ye make o' it?" I asked Aiden.
They're definately not teing us something. he finally confessed.
"Hopefully nothing big." I said as I went and laid down on my bed.
No. It's something big. Ah can just feel it. He threw at me.
"Maybe we shouldn't 'ave come 'ere..."

Chapter Five: The Truth Comes Out
We woke up the next morning and were ready right on the dot.
"Hello. I'm Doctor John Tuskin and this is Doctor Rose Fawn. We'll be the doctors overseeing your experiments." said a middle aged man. A younger women, possibly in her thirties, smiled at me.
"Doctor Tuskin, what will we be doin' exactly?" I asked.
"You'll find out soon enough, dearie." Doctor Fawn said with an overly sweet smile.
"Mr. Lockhart, please come with me, and Ms. Lockhart, with Doctor Fawn." said Doctor Tuskin.
I followed Doctor Fawn into a small, white room. She took my height, weight, blood pressure, that sort of thing.
"So. You and Aiden. Y'all are twins, right?" Doctor Fawn asked.
I nodded as she drew some blood.
"Some twins have a telepathy like ability to talk to each other. Some also can feel each other's pain and emotion. You and Aiden are like that, aren't you?"
I was silent.
Aiden, they know about us. How we talk Ah mean. I thought, slightly panicked.
It's okay Ali, just play it cool.
I put a puzzled look on my face. "What? Ah 'ave no clue whit yer talkin' bout."
Doctor Fawn smiled. "Of course not dear."
A few minutes later, she was done with the exam.
"Put those clothes on." she told me.
She left so I could change. It was an off white hospital gown with pants. I shrugged my hand me down clothes off and changed. It was a bit stiff and slightly scratchy, but it was bearable compared to what I have worn before.
"Done?" I heard Doctor Fawn through the door.
"Yah." I answered, as I opened the door.
"We'll be seeing Aiden and Doctor Tuskin now." she said as she turned on her heel.
We walked into a large room with tons of equipment. Cables and switchboards were everywhere. I stood there in awe.
"First, we will be testing your minds with these machines." said Doctor Tuskin.
"Whit about our minds?" I asked.
"Your ability to talk to your brother of course."
I looked at Aiden with shock written on my face. He shook his head.
"We can't talk to each other. Ah jest know 'im well enough to be able to-"
"Ms. Lockhart," Doctor Fawn interrupted, "we know of your abilities. It has been reported by almost all your foster parents."
The foster system is starting to sound good. Aiden muttered in my head.
"With all due respect, ma'am, we'd like to go home." I said, turning to leave.
"Honey, you are home. The English secret services has adopted you." said Doctor Tuskin.
"Well could ye kindly unadopt me and me brither here and we'll be on our way." I said, grabbing Aiden's hand.
Doctor Tusking snapped his fingers. Four different burly guards appeared.
"We can do this the easy way or the hard way."
"Uh. No thanks." I said, as I sprinted off with Aiden.
"Hard way it is."
An arm jerked me backwards and I turned to face one of the men. It was pretty terrifying. He was wearing all black and he had a mask on. A huge gun was on his back.
"Please situate them, thank you." Doctor Tuskin said through a microphone.
Two pairs if arms grabbed me and put me on a machine. I struggled to get up, but they clamped iron bonds on my wrists and ankles. I looked over and Aiden was getting the same treatment about three feet away from me. Two nurses walked up next to us with large needles.
Sedatives. Aiden thought.
I tried to get out of the bonds but it was near impossible.
"Let the tests begin." said Doctor Tuskin, as the nurses put the needles into our arms simultaneously. I felt woozy and the lat thing I saw was a burning light.

Chapter Six: I Will Take What Is Mine
Unknown Point of View
I saw her writhing on the table. All the electric charges being put through her body must be extremely painful. A small smile found its way on my face as she made a small shriek filled with agony. I looked over to her brother who was experiencing the same pain, even though he wasn't attached to any source of electricity.
Liars. They are connected somehow. Who knows what powers they could actually be hiding.
I stepped out of the light and into the shadows as a man walked past. This project had been my idea in the first place but what do you know. Once I had informed the secret part of the English government about my plan, they had stolen it and shoved me on the back burner. I would get what was mine. I would get what I deserved.

Chapter Seven:
Pain. That's all I felt when I woke up. Everything was aching like crazy. As if I had been thrown under a truck. As in awful. I rolled onto my side, curling into a fetal position. A groan escaped from my lips as I accidentally knocked my leg on something. I opened my eyes and saw Aiden. I tried to find will to even just talk, but I was too tired. My eyes were about to close again until a hand touched mine. Aiden was staring at me, tears in his eyes. He put a sweaty lock of my hair behind my ear and gave a sad smile. A door opened behind me and Aiden's face darkened when he saw who it was.
"Well now. It wasn't that bad now was it?" asked Doctor Tuskin. I attempted to find the strength to make a rude gesture at him but that didn't work out too well. I almost fell off the table trying to move a finger.
"Oh dear. The voltage may have been... somewhat faulty." he said with an evil glimmer in his eye.
"Ye enjoy watchin' people suffer, don't ye?" I said in a weak voice. He smiled and walked up to the table.
"Smart girl. People might not agree with my particular way of doing things, but as long as I get results, they're fine with it." he said, pushing his glasses up his nose. I spat in his face. He just grinned and wiped away the spittle.
"Little child. No one know's you're here. No one remembers that you even exist. You two conveniently died in a boating accident the day after we 'adopted' you. Your bodies were lost at sea. Pity." he said. Suddenly, the doctor put his face in mine.
"There's no escape. No one cares about you and you better get use to it. You're trash. Two orphans left in the hands of the cold, hard system. No one wants you. You're worthless." With that, he left.
I stared after him as tears began to fall down my face. Aiden's hand caressed my hair as I started to cry into his shoulder. After the tears stopped, I tried to sit up, but ended up collapsing onto my back once again. The door opened quietly and a gentle hand helped me into one of two cots in a corner.
"You're going to be ok, Miss Lockhart." a soothing male voice said as he helped me lie down on the cot. My eyes suddenly felt very tired. I looked up only to see the same man helping Aiden. The last thing I saw was Jack's smile, then I drifted of into a troubled sleep.

Chapter Eight:
I woke up on the cot, curled up in a ball with sheets around me. I ached all over but it was bearable. It had the feeling kind of close to when some of our foster parents had beat us. I opened my eyes and attempted to stretch, cringing as my muscles protested against the movement. I turned over to Aiden's cot. It was empty. I swung my legs off the bed and looked around. The door was open so I walked out into the hallway.
Aiden? I thought. Where are ye?
I heard a laugh coming from a room to my left. I peeked into it from the cracked door. Jack was sipping coffee along with a few other men. Aiden was silently eating on a barstool in the corner of the kitchen. I took a deep breath and walked in. Heads immediately turned and my gaze fell to the floor. I shuffled over to where Aiden and sat on a similar stool. Aiden looked at me and gave a weak smile. A hand holding a plate of eggs and bacon appeared in front of me. I looked up to meet Jack's eyes.
"Technically, I probably shouldn't be giving you this, but I know you're having a hard time and all so you can have mine." he said, putting the plate in my lap.
"Thanks." I said with a smile. I took the silverware from his other hand started to eat. He stood there for a moment, looking at the floor.
"Look." he finally said. "I know what they're doing to you. It isn't right. But they think it's necessary to advance humanity. Just remember that because of your sacrifice, mankind will be for the better, okay?"
Aiden stiffened beside me. Yah. Try telling that to the one's on the butcher's block and see how we feel. he thought.
I gave a small slap. He's trying to make us feel better. Ok?
I turned to Jack. "So why are you here? Why aren't you trying to stop it?" I asked.
He looked slightly uncomfortable. "I really can't. When the government wants something done, it gets done. No questions asked. I guess I'm here trying to make a difference."
Aiden scoffed beside me. I elbowed him in the side.
"We really appreciate it Jack." I say with a smile. He gives a small laugh and rubs his neck.
"If you need anything, just tell me okay?" he said slightly awkwardly.
I laughed. "Thanks agains for the breakfast."
He walked back towards his group of doctor friends.
Aiden looked at me. You're letting your feelings get in the way Ali. He's dangerous.
I give him a murderous look. "How can you say that after all he's done for us?"
Aiden looks at Jack and my gaze follows. Something is off about him. He's just... too nice. he says.
I laugh. "Well. When ye figure it out, tell me. I'm going to seconds."
