Natalie walked into her physical science class and took her seat in the back corner and pulled out her book. Once everyone was seated, the teacher, a middle-aged navy veteran, announced they were doing a lab. He started assigning partners: "Caroline and Kyle, Natalie and Theo," the list went on until everyone had a partner.
"Why can't we choose our own partners?" a popular girl named Melissa asked, examining her nails.
"Because then you wouldn't get anything done. That's why there is a seating chart. Gum in the trash can, please."
She rolled her eyes and got up and put her gum in the trash can.
"All right, everyone go find your lab partner," Mr. Hillsmith said.

Theo hated science a lot more than a normal student would. Sure he got good grades in it, but it went against everything his father and grandfather had taught him about the world. He used his tongue to play with his piercings, his fingers fiddling with the chains that hung off his pants. He wasn't paying attention to what the teacher was saying until he heard the phrase "go find your lab partner". He got up and looked around, unsure of who he was assigned.

Natalie sighed when she saw him looking around like he didn't know what he was doing. That meant she would have to get up approach him. She picked up her binder and pencil and walked over to him. "We're lab partners," she said awkwardly, putting her stuff down at the seat next to him.

"Oh…alright," he muttered sitting back down and pulling out his notebook so that he could write about what they were doing.

She sat down and pulled out the lab questions from homework the night before.
"Okay class, today we're going to see how you tell an acid from a base . . . " he went on and ended with "Your instructions are on last night's homework. I will be walking around observing, ask if you have any questions or need help."
Two beakers of clear but different liquids stood in front of them with litmus paper and other supplies in a bag.

Immediately Theo started to write down the lab outline so that he wouldn't have to worry about it later.

Natalie read the first set of instructions and started.

Theo designated himself as the lab writer. Letting Natalie take over the experimenting side.

Soon they were finished a little before most of the class. "Can I, um, copy what you wrote down?" she asked.

He nodded and handed it to her, pulling on a beanie.

"Thanks," she said and started copying.

Theo played with his pencil until she was done. He wasn't very good with other students.

She finished and gave it back to him. "My dad wore beanies a lot in high school," she said, determined not to be awkwardly quiet.

She sighed and got up to turn hers into the bin too. When she got back to her seat Mr. Hillsmith had passed out the quizzes from Monday and a girl named Denise had looked over from her table at Natalie's grade.
"Natalie I didn't even know you could make a ninety nine, don't you always make hundreds?" she asked in a belittling tone as if to say you're stupid.
Natalie turned her quiz over. "I don't see why its any of yours business."
"It isn't I'm just shocked that you could make a two digit grade like the rest of us," Denise smirked.
